drilling bulkheads for a 55 tank

ok the more I learn the more i question things.. guess im scared to mess things up.. my question is where do I drill the aquarium for the fittings?? towards the bottom or the top?? or does it not matter?

If memory serves me, most 55 gal. tanks were built using tempered glass, which means you can't drill them.
