Drilling, hang on overflows, or DIY on my tanks

I've been surfing the web for a hang on overflow for both of my systems (125 and 120). Tonight while trying to make a decision, I thought of drilling both. Here is my problem: Is it even possible to drill my 2 systems with the water still in it if I was to drop the water level to half? I had planned on moving from my DIY pvc overflows (somethings you just have to try) to a hang on overflow (pvc just isn't the best in the FTS, but it works), but worried from stories I've heard, so looked into the drilling. Anybody ever tried drilling a half full tank? Should I just deal with the coraline covered PVC? Any other thoughts or comments? Thanks

BTW: the pvc overflows still work great and I wasn't sure I was even going to replace. Thinking of fragging GSP and Xenia over them. :xd:

LOL!!! You got me thinking outside the normal box today, :xd:. Really thinking if trying a encrusting coral now to cover them. I was hoping you would have jumped into this, as I believe you have some good points. Thanks again.

Lots of things you can do to hide them... Me personally I would spray foam them to look like live rock.... Plant some zoos on there and have a sweet looking piece of art... Hth..
