Diamond bit hole saw like you would use for glass

I used a diamond tip core bit. You should be able to find the size you need here:

What size hole? I pinned my rock with a driveway marker and just used a standard bit (long). It's actually pretty soft as far as rock. A masonry bit would likely work as well or better.
