So I finally got around to checking my tank for tempered glass yesterday. I discovered that the bottom of my 25 year old tank is plain glass. Now I'm rethinking the whole build. Should I take the chance on drilling the bottom or continue my plan to drill the back? My interior overflow box, bulkheads, and drill bit are arriving today or tomorrow. I also haven't built my new stand yet. If this was yours what would you do?

Depends on the size of the tank. If its a small tank, using a low profile internal box mounted on the back is going to give more space inside the tank. This requires an external box though. If its a large tank, and you don't mind loosing space because of the larger overflow box plumbed thru the bottom glass, do that.

Overflow box on a drilled back is far better. Even though I have had to live with various reef ready tanks over time, I long ago stopped putting any additional bulkheads into the bottom panel. Just seemed to me like an invitation for future problems.

It's a 60 gal cube. So I would lose about 5 gallons of tank capacity by building a corner overflow.
