To boost health and speed cycling of my tanks I've always opted to take existing media from establish aquarium and move it to the new tanks filter. Now I understand if you take beneficial bacteria (BB for short) grown in a freshwater tank and toss it in a saltwater tank you're gonna shock it and kill it as salt inhibits the growth of many types of bacteria. The bacterial additive I used to cycle my existing freshwater tank is Seachem Stability, which says for use on marine or freshwater tanks. This leads me to believe that the good bacteria used in this product is capable of adjusting and thriving in water that either has or doesn't have salt in it. After all you can use freshwater aquarium salt made from evaporated seawater and not crash your bio-filtration in your freshwater tank. So my question is if I "activate" ceramic bio rings in my freshwater filter, move it to a bucket of water from that tank, then drip in saltwater can I acclimate the BB to living in saltwater or will I still loose most of the cultivated BB, making this a waste of time? Fresh Seachem Stability is always added daily during cycling so the rings would have additional BB introduced in the marine filter.
