I have a Starry Blenny shipping from Vivid Aquariums coming tomorrow and I'm wondering if I should drip or just temp acclimate it? If I do drip acclimate it should I add a drop or two of Prime to neutralize Ammonia then do the drip? What do you guys think is the better way?

Either way you will want to make sure that you match salinity. I have received fish in water ranging from 1.019 to 1.026.

I could be wrong but I feel like I read not to add prime to a shipped fish. Let me do a quick search and see if I can find out why.

edit:a reef squad member didn’t mention that so I am most likely wrong. Still searching...

Yeah so when I’m matching salinity if it’s off by say .3 can I just do a super long drip?

Ask them what the salinity will be and set your QT tank to that. I also like to poke a hole in the bag with a pin under the water line to check salinity without oppening the bag and add a little piece of duct tape over the hole once you've taken the measurement and then adjust as needed. Just float the bag for 20 min to temperature acclimate then pour the water through a net and release the fish into the tank.

I would but the problem is I already have two clownfish in QT and the Blenny is coming tomorrow.

a quick search showed that it could deplete the oxygen in the water. Does that sound right?

I would follow Vivid's acclimation instructions. In lieu of those I would drip acclimate.

If it were me I would just setup another QT but maybe that's not an option for you. In which case you could drip acclimate but the concern there is if there is copper in the water you can't use prime. So you will need to confirm whether or not they use copper. Temperature is also a concern with long drip acclimation.

Yeah I would just float the fish again after a long drip acclimation, I’ll ask about the copper.

Just be sure to monitor the temp during the drip so it doesn't get too cold. Possibly insulate the container somehow. /And ask about the salinity too, for all we know they could be the same or close.

Let me clarify, I would drip acclimate while floating the bag for temp acclimation as well.

Am I wrong in thinking that if you add a fish to an inhabited QT then you've reset the clock for everybody in the tank?

That’s exactly what I’ve been thinking but I’m fine with it I’m not really in a rush but I’d feel bad if I added a new fish and got the healthy fish sick.

Well first I’ll temp acclimate then drip then temp acclimate again but another way is just temp acclimating and dropping the fish in sorry I didn’t make the two clearer haha.

Just temp acclimate. Once it’s up to temp you can just remove/replace water a couple time for about 15 minutes and then throw him in your tank/quarantine. Drip acclimation is pretty unnecessary.
