I'm planning on curing my rock before putting in my new setup. Someone said that all the rock had to be of the same type. They said the bacteria would "compete" with each other if different types were used, and lead to a crash because they would try to overtake each other. Any truth to this....?

Just have them cycle and cure at the same time in the tank. Rinse well before in ro water before though.

I hosed mine then rinsed then cycled in fishless tank

They may have different bacteria growing on them if you were to look at the species level, but the two or more species perform the same function.

The nitrification and denitrification process has many steps carried out by several species.

Mixing the two types of rock would just cause the species which is better suited to the conditions of the tank slowly take over by out competing the other species. This won't cause a crash.
