Although my initial decision was to go with Live Rock and Live Sand, I am seriously examining using Dry Rock and dry sand. I have three reasons for this:
1) Economics, the cost is less than 1/2 what LR and LS would cost (very close to about 40%)
2) Control! Going this route would minimize the risk of getting undesirables into the system.
3) Aquascaping is MUCH easier
Luckily I am still in the build stages so I have the luxury of making decisions like this.
My system:
23 Gallon Fluval Vista (bowfront). 29" length x 9.5" wide x 17" height.
Fluval 206 Filter
(Mechanical Filtration [Coarse foam, Med foam, filter floss] => Chemical media [Matrix Carbon, Purigen] => Bio Media [Matrix])
NOTE: Purigen will not go in until after the cycle has completed.
Custom Plumbing for the intake and return hosing, including drain valving.
Kessil A80 LED (custom wing reflectors)
Eheim Jager 100W heater.
Screen Lid made from plastic mesh, 1cm square.
Questions:
1) Cycling. Planning on using Seachem Stability to seed the bacteria. Dose with Dr. Tims ammonia chloride @2ppm, to provide food for the bacteria. Here is the question -- Do I continue to dose the ammonia throughout the cycle, or just the once at the start, or some other dosing schedule? (Seachem has a dosing schedule that goes for 7 days.)
1a) Should ghost feeding be done at some point in the cycling? If so approximately when?
2) Do I need to put any form of glass protector on the bottom? (say a 1cm thick sheet of acrylic) to protect the glass from the rock?
3) Order of Aquascaping is Rock first and then sand? (I've read that rock stability is better if put on the glass first).
4) Tank temperature: As this is a reef tank with plans for some easy corals and about 4 fish and invertebrates, what temp is good? I've got the thermometer dialed in at 78 F. right now.
5) What is the approximate cycle time using the anticipated approach as listed above? (Note: I'm not in any rush to get the cycle established, it's about getting it right the first time)
6) Is the cycle complete once the following parameters are reached: Ammonia and Nitrite both at zero, Nitrate around 5 ppm?
