Hi, I used reef saver dry rock for my tank. It's been about a year now and I still have rock dust coming out of the crevices when I turkey baste it or scrub it with a toothbrush. Is this normal? Is it harmful to my fish and coral?

Thanks.

It's detrius, it comes from decayed matter in the tank. Fish poop, coral excretions waste..... Normal.

I'm not sure that's it. I know what detritus looks like. This dust is the exact same color as the original rock. For example, when I take a toothbrush to certain areas, the Coraline algae that was there flakes off. It's almost like the rock didn't cure all the way.

I think it’s just what you say it is rock dust. I just got new dry rock today and it’s dusty and has like crushed rock from transport. I could see if I put that in my tank and even in 10 years it would still come out and about. Wouldn’t worry about it much at all... just the same if you broke up two pieces of rock and there was crumbs left over

Reef saver is man made rock.
BRS told me that the reefsaver rock I bought 3 years ago was mined from an inland quarry in Florida. Which I believe because a chunk of mine had a couple shell fossils in it. This stuff is still releasing dust after 15 months of being in my tank , despite a bunch of washing prior to adding

Marco brand aquamaxx reefsaver rock (I just bought 20lbs that arrived today) is also mined from an inlander quarry and is exactly the same stuff i got from BRS 3 years ago

Some of the Marco brand reefsaver rock is made of hydraulic cement and a rapid cure activator.

So, it depends on what he's got

I bought 150 lbs. I blasted it with the hose In the driveway. A lot of dust came out of all the nooks and crannies. Then its been in a 30 gallon brute garage can w /saltwater curing for close to 9 months now. Can't wait to do my rock scape for new 180
