what is live rock

Live rock is porous rock, often made up of long-dead coral, that serves as a medium for the housing and reproducing of many tiny organisms, like copepods, that are a vitalhttp://www.ehow.com/about_6605964_aquarium-rock-vs_-dry-rock.html# food source for many fish like butterfly fish, gobies, shrimp and others. Live rock also provides a solid, porous ground for corals and anemones. Because live rock often ships with deceased organisms already inside it, adding it to your tank can help raise the initial ammonia levels and promote the nitrite/nitrate cycle, which is essential to the proper maintenance of a saltwater aquarium.

what is dry rock

Dry rock is simple rock that contains no organic matter. Slate, grave land tuffa are common base rocks, and these are simply used as decorative structures that also provide vital shelter. There really isn't much more to it dry rock is simply basic rocks that can be used in both marine and freshwater aquariums.

so dry rock is much more cheaper then live rock but it is dead. can it be brought back to life or shall i say house those tiny critters once again ? ?

Dry rock isnt just basic rock..
Its called dry rock because it has no life. If you take live rock and set it in your drive way for a week then its dry rock. I wouldnt say dry rock is any kind of rock.. Dry rock is MUCH better then live rock in many ways. No pest "biggest thing in reefing". But dry rock needs time to become live rock and cycle.

nitrifying bacteria housed in live rock is another big reason that live rock is so much more expensive...the biggest difference is simply the time (time is money) that you cycle your tank for...i've setup tanks with live rock for years that by the next day are ready for fish and corals if i lend the person some of my own sand and bio material from my sump

Dry Rock is better if you don't want any bad hitch hikers. The dry rock, in todays technology, is as good as Live Rock, or I should say will be when it matures.

Just your time you want to spend on the tank. If your very patience then dry rock is the way to go, but If you want to start your tank going with live rock is the best way, but also live rock is a good source of bacteria.
