I have a question ,, I know there are a lot of variables that would prevent a 100% right answer ,, your not going to get that with this question ,, I was just looking for a general answer ,, a kinda in the ballpark answer ,, have always been curious :) I am going to give you a hypothetical :)

So ,, you have a mixed reef tank set up with a sand bed ,, its been running for two years ,, average amount of fish in the tank ,, average amount of Live Rock or another form of media in the system ,,, you decide you want to add a new softball size piece of dry rock to your sump tank ,, how long ,, more or less :) would it take for this new piece of dry rock to be become ,, as much as possible with the different variables that come into play ,, a fully cured ,, covered with beneficial bacteria piece of rock :)

Are you saying you want to add the dry rock to your sump to PREP it so it eventually makes it to your DT?

In my 15yrs, I've never had a problem just adding a single piece of dry rock directly into my aquascape.

Takes a good 60-90 days for it to start looking like all the other LRs

I am asking ,, I want to say this right ,, say you are starting a second tank ,, you take all the dry rock you are going to place in the second tank ,, you add it to the sump and the display of your up and running tank ,, or you put it in a Bruite can with some of the Bacteria that you can buy and add it to the Bruite ,, I would think because of the Bio Load on a up and running system ,, that would be the best way to acquire the bacteria on the new rock ,, I know ,, want to say this right also ,, you can only grow your bacteria level on the new rock to a point that the bio load in the up and running system will allow the bacteria to grow and spread ,,

What I am asking ,, what is the optimal amount of time this dry rock needs to be in the up and running system ,,, to acquire a optimal amount of bacteria on it ,,, is there a answer for this ,, or just a stupid question :)

I would say 30-40 days just like a tank cycle. Maybe even sooner since the tank is already established. It will probably have ammonia processing bacteria in that time but still be white if there’s no light in the sump.

I added some dry rock to my display with some live rock I’ve had for a year from Indonesia. After about 4-5 months, I couldn’t tell the dry rock apart from the live rock.
