hi everyone am in the mid of setting up a 90 gal sps dominant tank with 2 inch sand bed in the main display. Got a new 80lb of caribsea dry sand, the first rinse tds was way high at 600...., am using ro water with 0tds for the rinse. After having a few round of rinsing manage to get it down to around 20ish tds at most. but after soaking it at 20ish tds for the night, i tested it again the next day and it creep up to 50 plus tds, is there a problem with the sand is it leaching out tds? Am producing so much ro water just for this rinse. Is there any other options or suggestions you guys can give or is it after the rinse and the sand is good to go?

You can just rinse it with normal tap water unless your water is ridiculously foul. Your TDS readings are likely soo high because of turbidity. Either way, it is not an issue

I had to rinse my caribsea dry sand for close to two hours before it ran clean with no sediment. I used tap water until it ran clean. Then I soaked in RODI water with prime and then another quick rinse in RODI.

I believe sediments are from the sand itself because am using rodi water at 0 tds to rinse it

How long did u soak it in rodi water with prime did u run it with a wavemaker inside?

I did a 3 day soak to be extra safe. However I don't think you need to for that long. If I did it again I would just do a soak for a couple hours then let it dry in the sun for a day.

Just rinse it with tap water and use it. There is no need to worry about this. A few ounces of tap water won't hurt anything unless you live in Flint (sorry, ouch). I fill all new tanks with tap water anyway.

The best way to rinse it is to put it in a 5g bucket, put the hose in the bottom and move it around until it runs clear. You can do 1/3 of a bucket at a time.

Does ya tds reading creeps up again after the next day?

I rinsed 60 pounds and can't remember a spike in the bill. I didn't measure TDS at the time. I was more concerned with the dust than TDS, which is why I did the soak in RO/prime after a rinse in RO.
