Dry skimming tunze 9001 DC

Hi guys, I'm currently running a tunze 9001 (AC version) and while I do like the skimmer when its dialed properly I'm finding the skimmate quite inconsistant and rather wet for my liking. I was wondering if anyone was getting thick sludge out of a properly tuned DC version? I'm thinking about moving my current skimmer to my 40g frag tank and purchasing a DC for my 20g mixed reef (lots of coral), with a single six lined wrasse.

I had this unit and same inconsistency with skim. Not sure if new pump will be the answer
