Randy,

Will normal drywall dust have any effect on water chemistry, about to start drywalling a lot of area where my tank I located, am I setting myself up for a crash?

will this make my skimmer go overtime (I imagine)

what would someone suggest in limiting the dust getting into the water column?

I had a friend that had remodeling done with his tank in the room and ended up crashing his tank. Nothing survive.

Lots of extra plastic sheeting way easier/ cheaper than fixing a problem in your tank.

The main component of drywall is calcium sulfate. That dust won’t hurt a tank. It may have some other sorts of minor ingredients that could be more of a concern, but I’m surprised someone would have a tank issue without actual chunks landing in the waster.

It certainly is a good idea to keep it out, but I wouldn’t go crazy the way you might if treating for insects or painting with an organic based paint.

I would say it depends on the drywall... If you use the green or purple board it is mold and water resistant so there are some moldicides ( spell check say's it a word) in it just be careful. I would plastic and tape off the tank and run you skimmer airline to a fresh area. The airflow from outside will keep the plastic with positive pressure so hopefully it will blow the dust out. Hope this helps and happy reefing.

Yes, I agree that if it has such agents added it is a much bigger concern.
