I know its a big no no to have a goby in a dsb. I am planning on a tank upgrade within the next month or so and have a diamond goby in my tank right now. And in no way going to get rid of him. I've been planning on a 1/2" of live fiji pink with some sand from my existing tank. Just curious if anybody has had success (4+) years with one in their tank. As my 60g has been set up for 3+ years and want to have all my fish grow old. So i have a special connection with them. I know most people just chuck out a fish if it dosnt suit their need, but im trying to make a tank to suit their needs lol Any response would help!! Again I know its a no-no just was curious if anybody has had long term success with one over the years. Thanks again!!!

Not sure on dsb with a goby? Never heard of it being a bad idea. The main thing is you want to make sure your rock work is either in the bottom if tank or supported so it isn't able to move if the goby burrows underneath. I've got a dsb with a bluespot jawfish and never had a problem.

I'm with RacinRevo, we have a Deep Sand Bed with gobies and snapping shrimp. Don't get rid of fish,I have found that their digging (over time) is good, its when we uproot several layers at a time that its bad. Definitely set your rock work up as if there is no sand. There can be no settling of rocks.

thanks, big help! Just everywhere i read it says no sand sifting gobys. But if other people have had success with it then I def want to go that way.

Thats weird. I have never heard or read anywhere to not put gobies in a tank with a sandbed. That makes no sense. You definitely want to make sure that the rock work is stable, but I would set up the rock work before the sand anyway. In my 130g build I am working on now I fully intend on a DSB and will have several gobies in it along with some pistol shrimp to go along with them. Planning on a blue spot as well.

I've read it and heard it soo many places. I will try and find a source for it. I was always told that all the life that makes a dsb "alive" would be consumed by almost all sand sifting animals besides a rare few. I think this got stuck in my mind so well from browsing Newyorksteelo's youtube. But I do understand Reef keeping is such a new and growing hobby, I love to hear everybodys opinion/ facts. Thanks for the help

DSB article - CALFO

this is an article by Anthony Calfo. I honestly respect his opinion over almost anyone else in the hobby. His success rate and knowledge is UNREAL esp if you have read his book " The book of coral propagation"

IME my diamond goby only sifts the top layer which seems harmless. Occassionally digs a hole or two but in my last 10 years of reefkeeping I personally have never had an issue.

I have about a 3" sand bed, 4" in some places with a diamond and no worries for a year now. He does what he is supposed to do and turns aver the sand a lot. Only downside is his tunneling under the LR. If I could do it over, I would have put the rock on the bottom. He collapsed my rock work twice already. He is a replacement because when I was in my 55 first, the previous collapsed the rock work on him. Sucked trying to dig him out of there. You could see him when you looked under tank all flattened out.

I have one... My bed was 2", however my diamond goby has made one end of my tank a DSB. I use Fiji Pink, and the little bugger really moves the sand around. My grand kids love him. Also there will be sand storm days sooo be willing to have less than clear pristine clarity.

I am also a big fan of Anthony Calfo and have all his books. He does not address sand diggers in that article.

The article where people get the idea that critters that stir the sand are not good is from this one:

Ron Shimek's Website...Deep Sand Beds

My personal opinion, having had a DSB tank for over nine years which has sand stirrers, is that they don't harm it and may actually do it some good. It is a clean as the day I put it in there.

Yeah not good

If the rock work falls over it is not the fault of the goby, but that of the person who set the rock on top of the sand. It comes down to knowing about the critters that you put in the tank. Gobies dig and if your rock work isn't solid, it will fall. I base my use of a DSB on the research that Ron Shimek has done. I have read a lot about them from many different authors and I have always seen a benefit from them.

Thread revival- Love my gobies, they are the reason I have a tank. Setting up a new 72g bowfront though, and will use a DSB. Don't want them to deplete the sand critters, is there a recommendation (other than zero) on square feet of DSB per gobie?
