I am not a fan of deep sand beds, in fact I don't even like a sand that is more than 2" in my DT. My current tank is less than inch but in the past I have had up to a couple of inches. What I don't like is the ugly view through the glass of all of the algae and detritus distracting from the nice looking corals. Why not just put a nice border around the base about as deep as the sand bed?

I believe a lot of people do that with their tanks, especially the people with in wall tanks.
