My DT at home went fallow after an ick outbreak back on Jan 18. Since then - the only survivors are a breeding pair of clown fishes (in a HT now breeding every 16 days) and a hippo tang that’s in its own 10G HT (I couldn’t put the hippo tang in the tank running CP - but those ones didn’t make it)

I plan on keeping the clown fishes in the tank it’s in until I get a good clutch (or two) for my office tanks.

But the hippo developed some HLLE (black spots on head) and the tail is a little ruffled.

I think it would be happier back in the DT - but didn’t know if it’s better to try to treat the HLLE in a QT? The extra room should be less stressful right? Or is it better to keep it closed up to have the Selcon do its thing? (Didn’t know if it has topical effects too)

Hippo tang is eating great.

Thoughts? Opinions? Reluctant to put her back in the DT just to get ick again.

(Alternative was to bring her to the office once I’m done setting up my 12’ tank - but reluctant based on how many times she’s had ick already, and survived treatments. I REALLY don’t want to have to hunt fishes out of the big tank once I get it running!)

If the fish only has HLLE (and no other diseases), then placing him/her back in the DT is the right thing to do. Same goes for a fish with Lympho. Neither are curable in QT.

I don't think that what tank he is in will affect the HLLE much. Pristine water conditions may help as well. So the most stable/largest tank you have is probably the best (most likely your DT). High quality food and Selcon is good. I have been told Zoecon is even better. I just recently started soaking nori with zoecon for a Sailfin I have that has developed HLLE.

That’s what I was thinking. I felt like the HLLE had improved last time in QT relatively quickly just from Selcon soaked diet.

I also alternate selcon and Vita chem each time I prepare frozen. Like you said... Variety.

Has the DT been fallow ?not enough to be icu free?

Keep an eye on the ammonia levels if you did not shadow feed the tank while it was fallow. Good luck.
