Can I use display water for my quarantine? The hippo I have in my DT is showing signs of velvet. But I don't have any extra bio media or sponges that have bacteria on it. Treating with copper.

Generally yes, but if the infected fish came from the DT, it is best avoided....having said that if you have nothing else, its no worse than where he came from. You can use Seachem Stability to help with the bacteria. You want to isolate him from the DT water as soon as possible. You also want there to be no other fish in the DT for a period long enough to starve the velvet out.

Hippos are particularly tricky, so ask lots of questions and good luck.

What copper are you treat with and are you testing it?

You can use, but its better to start new with NSW rather than using dt as it might contain free seimming parasites that can reinfect the fish. Anyway bacteria need a surface to live on like aquarium glass or sponge or cermaic media (lr, sand, cermaic media not recommended with copper as they absorb it) so getting water from there wont help much. Use bacteria bottles, preferably live ones like one and only or turbo start . Best of luck

The bacteria are on the rock, glass, and other solid surfaces. The amounts in the water are insufficient to process ammonia/nitrite. Use a sponge in a hang on filter and seed it with bottle bacteria. It's best to move fast if it is velvet.

I bought the fish yesterday. At first it looks like ich, but it's looking sort of dusty so I pulled both fish right away. I've had a complete wipe not too long ago, and I should be known better. I'm such a dummy!

Dont beat yourself up. Most of us have added fish and hoped for the best. Treat the fish in QT and let the tank go fallow for the recommended time.

Dude i don't have a QT i use seachem ParaGuard (http://www.seachem.com/paraguard.php) on my DT when my hippo tangs got ich or velvet. ParaGuard wont affect any inverts and corals, just follow the dosing directions after three days i do a 35% and keep dosing again until parasites are gone. Ich or velvet will keep on coming back to Tangs and clowns if you can keep a clean water on your DT.

ParaGuard in your DT isnt a good option. Ich management is an option many people us on their tanks. There is a risk that the fish will lose immunity and bad things happen. There is no such thing as velvet management. If you get velvet in your DT , it is just a matter of time before the fish losses start. Best option with velvet is immediate QT and treatment. That includes allowing the DT to go fallow so the parasite dies.

I didn't think any other treatment for velvet other than copper works, correct?

Chloroquine Phosphate works too
Also in some situations other chemicals like formalin might work *but more research is needed for how effective is it*
But its better to stay with Copper or CP as they are proven to work

So basically I have to keep the copper at the therapeutic level for 30 days? I just wanna make sure I got this right.

Yes. Make sure you dose your water change to therapeutic levels before you make changes. Never let it drop below therapeutic level.
Ahhh genius! I always wondered how to figure out how much copper to put back into the tank when doing a water change. But this makes complete sense! At least there's no going up or down in copper levels.
