i picked up this ducan frag and was woundering growth and placement. i put him on sand bed close to rock and other hard surfaces .do the grow from there own skeleton or incrused like a mat?

Bump for following, I just got a ducan as well

My Duncan sits on a small rock. I get approximately 125 PAR on the sandbed around it and I'm guessing about 175-200 PAR at the tip top of the Duncan.

It gets moderate chaotic flow. I don't spot feed, but I broadcast feed mysis daily.
I've had it about 15 months. It has grown from 5 heads to about 30 heads.
The new heads spout off of the base of mature heads. The whole 30 head Duncan sits on a single stalk.

nice i got mine in little flow it was a frag. so it will branch off the small skeleton off frag? does calcuim help these guys grow more skeleton shell?

If it's a branching duncan then it will branch out. If it's the other kind then it's polyps will split and it will grow into a giant ball as it splits and have a ton of polyps.
You need to keep your cal. alk and mag inline for it to grow. All three work together in a corals growth.
Here's a water parameter guide / article for you.

I'd keep the cal around 440 and to be safe mag at about 1350 to 1400.

lol thanks. i will raise calcuim some and idk but am thinkn i have regular time will tell.i read some on them just was unsure if it grew off stalks on to other rocks or it keeps branching. the stuff i read said to place it in low meduim flow on sand bed . that it likes to attach to hard surfaces thanks i enjoy it my girl freind says it looks like flowers so she smiles too. thanks again

If it's not already attached to a rock, then I'd putty the base to your live rock.
Please test your mag. levels too.
Once a Duncan starts to grow it can split each head and make more polyps fairly quickly.

And your Welcome. :)

nice! i read and got mixed reviews on strong to meduim flow and light . when i read it says there found in deep waters so i asume lower light and flow . cause in ocean deeper down prolly has less flow and light. kinda put him half shade half light low to medium flow seems good for me so far

Over time, they can adapt to many light and flow conditions. :)

thanks again for tip not glued yet just in sand bed was gonna see how he reacted to lights and flow first. so far hes good. i just feed him earlyer and his disc exspanded and tenticals kinda bubbled up a little bit. i hope he grows quik hes deffinatly intresting. i also dont glue frags in i wedge them just in case my bta goes on move . are you exsperinced with anemones go vols?

Once my corals grows over my plugs then they encrust onto my live rock and keep on growing.
Personally, Once my bta's find their happy spot, then they don't roam anymore. If you change the lighting, water params. flow etc.
then a bta can roam to find a new happy spot. I have one bta that has not moved in two years. It has corals near it but it can sense them and changes it shape as to not touch them.

You need a very mature reef system for a anemone, lot of rock work and be able to handle the bio-load that an anemone brings.
If a bta continues to roam, then it's not happy. You have to have good water quality, flow and rock work for it to bury it's foot. If it can't find a home then it will not bury it's foot and it will not feel safe.
