The pump on my closed loop is leaking, can I use a basic return pump to replace it?

It now has an a.o. Smith.. So I could just replace it w a mag 9?

yes you could but some mags will leek around the seal. you could always look into a marineland pump. i do believe you can plum in to the intake side on those

Ok if a mag isn't a good idea a marineland pump won't be any better. I was looking at using my mag externally and everyone said don't due to leaks. Marinelands are terrible ime. I would look for a pump specifically for external use.

I've not heard of mags leaking but then again I have never tried to run one externally. Can you close you closed loop until you get it fixed?

excellent, i would suggest a pump that is design for external use too.

Well I let the pump run for a little and it is no longer leaking
