Hey everyone, I have a question about salt. Seems like everyone has their own opinion so lets see if someone can help me.

I am was using instant ocean salt. Then moved to coral life salt. However I am not seeing a difference in these two brands.

The reason why I changed was because my CA and AK were testing low. So I had to use supplements to get the numbers within normal ranges.

Ive heard of people NOT having to add supplements in their tank, if that is true then it must come from the kind of salt that is being used correct? Yes, I have checked online but has anyone had experience using a higher end salt with better results?

Therefore my question is what salt should I use if I am testing lower than normal. My ranges are
CA 340 to 36o
AK 8
PH 7.6 to 8.0

Thanks for the help on this one!

You don't want you dKH at 8? That's usually a good spot. Instant Ocean mixes their Alk at 11. Don't know what Coralife is, but I've used Kent Sea Salt with decent results. Actually have one last batch, then using the 200 gallon box of IO salt I have.

If you want very high Alk then the Red Sea Coral Pro is around 13

Think it depends what corals you have and how many. I have a 32 biocube with palys, zoas, 2 hammers, torch, Duncan, and 3 Goni. I don't dose but WC 20% every 7days religiously. Also feed reefroids 2-3 times a week.

I use Fritz.

Okay the salt brand and type will increase my CA and KH numbers... Good to know because I was told salt is salt regardless of the brand and type

Not true at all. Many different brands with different parameter values. With the corals I keep the alk and calcium have to be added daily due to uptake and I use red sea coral pro. Once you determine your tanks needs you can figure out what salt fits your needs. Instant ocean is a great salt.
