dumb question regarding 10X flow rate

Hi, I have read so many variations and accounts on the differing forums that I have now confused myself!

When the Triton method refers to 10X turnover rate are they referring to:

Total empty system volume capacity= empty sump + empty display tank?

Display tank capacity only

Sump capacity only

Actual total Net water volume of Display ( after rocks and sand)

Actual total Net water volume of Display (after rocks and sand) + actual sump water volume

I am sure these opinions will vary but my guess would be total water volume of the display & sump turned over 10/Hr.
