dumb question

Has anyone taken shells from there local beach and used them as a substrate for corals to attach to?

What do I do to prepare them? Do I boil the shells in ro water? Palythoa dont live where i will be collecting the shells from so should be okay?

I usually just put them in the tank.
I might rinse em in tap water.
I prefer sand dollars though.
