If you’re upgrading to a bigger tank would you be able to fill it, let in run for a couple of weeks and just transfer everything into it all at once? All live rock has been established for several years and I wouldn’t add anything new until some time had passed. I’m not seeing a problem. Am I missing something?

When I transferred to a bigger tank, I just transferred every thing I could including the water, then I added extra water. I did not get any problem. I do not have corals, but I do not see why it could be wrong.

I’m looking to go up about 80 gallons. I figured I would set my salinity so I wouldn’t need to mix up 80 gallons in buckets. I was thinking I would leave the new tank as low as possible and then add old water to top it off.

Thats how I did it. I did 2 tank transfers this year, both times I used new sand, built the tanks and let it run just for a few days, then did a straight transfer of rock and filtration and livestock. I did not lose a single specimen both times.
