I've ran my 340 gallon (Successfully) using a modified 75 gallon sump. I have a return chamber that has a bulkhead out the side for my external return pump. I keep the return chamber free and clear of all equipment. It stays empty except for my float switches for my ATO, they monitor the return chamber.
My middle chamber has my two heaters. My overflow chamber is where things get dicey. I've got two 1.5" overflows flowing into my overflow chamber. I've got my massive 14" Diablo skimmer in this chamber. I've got my Turbo Aquatics L4 Algae turf scrubber setting on top of this chamber pressing tightly against my skimmer, fighting for space. Then, lastly, I've been using filter socks on my primary overflow pip in this chamber, also pressed tightly against my skimmer. I also have my dosing lines, temp probe, ph probe, ATO hose, all in this chamber.
That said, my wife is getting more irritated at me every week she sees my filter socks going in the washer. However, if I run without them, the tank gets cloudy with debris (26 fish messing things up all day.)
For Christmas I ordered a large Bubble magus filter roller. After researching the rollers, it seems like this one is the one that will handle my situation the best in terms of flow rate. (up to 2000 gph flowing through my sump and overflows).
My question is how do people fit all this equipment in their sump? I have a bench above 2/3rds of my sump so the overflow section is the only section I have easy access to right now. (It was all I thought I needed access to in the past. I'm planning on redoing my fish room and relocating the bench. So that I have full access to the whole sump. I'm thinking skimmer in the middle section of the sump (if it'll fit between the baffles with the skimmer pump.) ATS in the overflow section that then flows to the skimmer. And then filter roller in the overflow section and plumbed to my primary overflow.
With so much equipment how do people manage it all? Or do our sumps start looking like transformers... Lol. I'd love to remove the skimmer. I tried that once, and I did not have a good experience. With my nitrates and phosphates on the edge right now (at NO3 at 26 and PO4 at .07 I can't risk taking the skimmer offline.) And, in all honesty I probably need a larger turf scrubber, not smaller by any means. I'm hoping I can find a way to mount the bubble magus in the sump. But, everything takes up so much space! I may have to bite the bullet and get a life Reefz skimmer. One that's taller but not as big around. I think they do a 12" that would fit my system pretty well.
How do you manage space in your sumps? And still have it maintainable?
