Hey everyone,

My Duncan has been doing fantastic, i got it a few months ago and it started as 5.2 heads (Lfs guy sawed through a polyp, but it grew back) and now has about 6 and 5 mini heads growing. It opened everyday when the lights came on and closed when they were off.

i was out of town this past weekend and have been battling cyano. It got pretty bad and my lfs once told me to add more bacteria to try to out compete it. Now I’m not sure if thats true and if they compete for the same space, but i did it Sunday night after manually removing as much cyano as i could. Yesterday my Duncan didn’t open and today it still don’t open. Water parameters are on the low end with 0 nitrate 0 phosphate. I haven’t tested kh and gh but i think they are fine, will follow up with that. Ph is ~8.1.

has anyone seen bacterial dosing cause coral to close up?

duncans are very hearty, mine get upset sometimes when i add any kind of product to the tank. i wouldnt worry about it. they are very hard to kill.

0 nitrate is favorable to cyano. 0 nitrate and 0 phosphate is bad for the coral (generally speaking in terms of the hobby).

I may have trace phosphate, not measurable by the testing method i have, i don’t have a Hanna checker. My corals have been doing very well except for this one occasion. I do frequent water changes to replenish elements since i don’t have a dosing system so it’s been hard to get my nitrates to go up, even with over feeding. I have Chemipure elite which is probably reducing my nitrates,

Which test kits do you have?

i have api reef test kit. It doesn’t seem to sensitive in that it can’t pick up below.25 ppm and it’s kinda hard to tell. Calcium about 400 and KH 9 dKH

Yeah the phosphate test for api is useless. I would consider using something that can detect below 0.25

Yeah i need to get a new test, my Duncan is back open today so maybe it was just throwing a fit.
