I never thought I would need to post a help thread for my Duncan coral since it has been my most consistent coral but here goes. It has stopped opening and has been closed for roughly a week. It has been in the tank for about 4 months with the amount of heads increasing from 8 to almost 20 since it was added. Nothing major has changed in the tank. I have messed with the flow a little bit which may coincide with it not opening but the change wasn't that drastic....plus I wouldn't think of the Duncan as a flow dependent coral. Other corals seem to be doing fine (Torches, Yellow figi, Hammer, Digitata, Frogspawn, Open Brain, Pipe Organ) I have tried a 15 gallon water change (60 gallon tank) but didn't seem to help as of yet. Water parameters are:

TEMP - 79.4
SG - 1.025
Ammonia - 0
Nitrites - 0
Nitrates - too low to read
Calcium - 420
Alk - 8 dkh
PH - 8.2
Phosphates - too low to read

Any ideas why this coral would just stop opening? It would eat Mysis shrimp weekly and would almost always be open. At the very most, it would close for a couple of hours at a time. How long should I let it remain closed before messing with the location or flow again? It hasn't been moved since I initially placed it. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Is there another coral touching it? Mine never tolerated being touched by any other corals. Mine was also sensitive to changes in SG, if the Duncan was closed I knew I had best check my specific gravity. They are great Canary's of the tank.

No, nothing within 6 inches of it. I have an ATO so my SG really doesn't fluctuate at all either. That is why it is so confusing.....nothing has really changed. It has slightly less flow than it did before but not enough where I would think that would make a difference. I also don't have any fish that would mess with it. No, I haven't tried dipping it yet.....as a last resort I can try that. I would hate to dig it out of its spot though...it hasn't been moved from day one.

If all else is in line they'll open back, they're just messing with ya.

Well I went and bought a small Hydor Koralia 240 and pointed it directly at the Duncan and it is already looking like it is starting to open...which is more movement than I have seen for over a week. It appears, as of right now anyways, that he likes a lot more flow than he is/was currently getting. Looks like I will be rearranging my powerheads again :-(
