Ive has this duncan for about 3 months. It opened up beautifully and was even growing new heads. Well it has not fully opened like it used to anymore. It has been at least 3 weeks since it fully opened. All the new heads that were growing on it are now dead. Anyone can help detect problem? Also I had a candy cane die within the last few weeks as well.

What kind of fish/invertebrates do you have in the tank? Do you feed the Duncan at all? Do you have any other corals in the tank? How do they look?

I have hermits, a conch, astreas, and 4 nassarious. For fish 2 clowns, 1 yellow tang, 1 carpenter wrasse, & 1 royal gamma. I do feed all the corals either mysis or marine cuisine at least once a week. As I said, i lost a candy cane recently as well. It shriveled up and never opened at eventually died. Around the same time the Duncan stopped opening up. All other corals are doing well so far.

What are your other corals? If params are the same I would probably peg my guess right now on not enough nutrients. LPS especially do need some nitrates, phosphates, and other nutrients. I would feed it more and try and raise the nitrates to about 5 and the phosphates to around 0.1. It should be fine in the other params.

Hammers, frogspawn, candy cane i just bought, birdnest, cans, favias, anemones, i do have a refugium with chaeto

Do the Clownfish show any interest in the Duncan coral at all? I had one make the connection between me feeding the Duncan and food and it just destroyed the coral. The interaction was just too much. Same goes for ornamental shrimp too. Hmm.. Have you made any changes to the lighting recently? Does the coral open up at night at all?

No the clowns don’t mess with it. I have a bta that I recently added hoping they will eventually host it. & No does not even open up at night :(

I have a Duncan and it closed up for about a week and when I checked everything my nitrates was 0 and phosphates as well. I added some amino acid to feed the corals, a good additive for corals, and the next day he was open and has been ever sense then.

What brand did you use?

Okay, first what size tank? Are you using any carbon? How close are they to the hammer, frogspawn or favia. These guys each on there own can be an issue with sweepers.

50 gal closest hammer was about 6-7 inch & i do have a bag of carbon in my sump.

50gal and no euphyllia close. Not the favia either? Any chalices? Both these guys can have very long sweepers. Just ruling out any fighting.

If it is not improving and you have any brown substance on it, take it out and dip in saltwater (can be from tank), lugols solution, and kanamysin or similar. Can leave in for 4 hours. I would add airstone though. Then rinse and replace. I have saved a few lps with this method. Kills any infections.

Nope favia doesn’t really use sweepers. I’ve been having issues with it tissue keeps dying i’ve dipped it in lugols twice and has not improved. Probably just going to frag it

They like a lot of flow. Flow often makes them open more

That said, the pics seem to show dark areas that worry me. Can you get a clearer pic?
