I have small Duncan that has been in my tank for several months. For the first 3 1/2 months it was open with fully extended polyps. For the last 2 to 2 1/2 weeks it has not opened. My water parameters are excellent, I have not changed anything, and it has been in the same spot since the day I brought it home... Should I move it to my sump or just leave it alone?

Hi there! Can you post a picture? That might help. Also, have you checked for pests? Doing a coral dip might reveal a few pests you didn't even know were there.

Yep.. I dip them... I thought (actually read) LPs is pretty parasite/disease resistant

Any extra dip won't hurt, another thing to check would be ALK (although duncans are pretty hardy), and a picture might give us a better idea of whats going on and improve our ability to give you more pertinent advice.

I wouldn't say that they are parasite resistant. There are several things that your LPS can end up with. Brown jelly, really big flatworms, all kinds of things.

I know it can be bothersome to post values, your water may be perfect but it's my experience that the most common cause of stress to Duncan is water chemistry, second is near by corals or algae growing around polyp tissue. You could have a bad alk reagent or need to calibrate a refractometer. It really helps to actually post values.

Well last night I was looking closely at my Duncan with bright flashlight and a magnifying glass. It actually looks as if something took a bite out of it on oe side. I will get some pics after works and post it...what in the world?

BTW calcium 440, dkh 10, ph 8.4, po4 o.o1,MG 1470, nitrate 0.01, ammonia /nitrite 0

what other inhabitants in the tank. I had to get rid of my dwarf angel after starting to acquire some LPS because it loved nipping. Any new fish additions within the past 3 weeks?

Nope...nothing added for a couple of months. .

..
Doesn't that look like something had a bite?
I have a Darwin Clown, Ocellaris clown, yellow watchman goby, and a sharknose goby.

Do you have a fair amount of algae in your tank? It looks like the Duncan has algae in its mouth. Your nutrients could be high even though your test kits are reading low levels. Also, it may be retracting if the algae is physically touching it as a defense mechanism.

I just did a 30% water change. I did have cyano, a few strands of bryopsis (none for 2 weeks +), and a bit of hair algea in a few places due to a powerhead slipping and disturbing the sand bed..
I have taken a jeweler magnifying glass with a 2 miles candle power spot light and did not see anything on the Duncan.

My Duncan is also starting to get algae around the rim of its skeleton, any advise for removal? I've been trying to bring down my phosphate, but even with two 40% water changes I've not seen much change in the algae (which seems to be growing almost exclusively on my corals).

Look who is perking up! My Duncan has been tightly closed for a few weeks, but this morning here he is appearing to open!

I moved the rock slightly and was able to get a better picture of the "hole/bite" in the side of my Duncan. Anyone have any idea what has caused this???
