Durso and Return or Herbie?

Hello all,
rookie question. I have 2 holes in my reef ready 200G, one appears to be 1.5" and one 1". The previous owner was using the 1.5 for durso standpipe and the 1" for the returns on both sides. Is this the most common method? alot of pictures i see posted on r2r shows a "Herbie" setup, but that wouldn't leave me any place for my returns correct?

Can u do an over the top return? Or drill the tank for a return if not tempered glass?

Some choose to go with the herbie style overflow for redundant protection and pipe their returns over the top. Herbie will also be quieter.

This might be a good idea. I am not sure i can pipe over the top for return. Im still very new to the plumbing part. I bought a bunch of pipe and fittings today and have no idea what im doing! lol

My overflow was originally a Durso and I could never get it to be quiet, so I switched to a Herbie and it has been silent ever since. I was extremely lucky that there was just enough space for me to run the return lines around the back.

Can i do a herbie with one hole at 1.5" and the other at 1" ???

In theory, you just run the return lines over the top of the tank (like a canister filter)? It would just not look the prettiest? I’m in a similar boat (still tank shopping), but inexperienced at plumbing. I want to try, but the learning curve is a big curve!

That can definitely work. I would use the larger hole for the emergency drain and the smaller hole for the siphon.

Yes, that's what I did. I'd recommend getting some black PVC as it looks a lot better. Here's a picture. You can see the two PVC lines coming over the back on either side of the overflow box.

Ok so i think i will go with the 1.5 for the emergency drain and the 1" for the siphon.

Is 1" siphon on both sides enough flow into the sump ??

also here are some pics of my sump that i had mad a while back. I now have to figure out the best way to get my plumbing down to it from those 2 siphons.

Also, here are the return lines with the return nozzles on them. Can i use these to run back into the tank over the back area??
