Durso gurgling/flushing

Is there a way to stop the noise from the durso without having to replumb the system? I know the sound is caused by a buildup of air in the lines. The tank was already set up previously with braided flex tube. I'd rather not replumb with PVC if I can help it.

Picture? Does it have a vent at the top of the elbow on the intake?

The friend I got the system from ran it set up the same way. Only difference is they had it on a different stand which was taller.

They didn't want to let that go with the system so gave me the original stand that came with it which isn't quite as tall.

While taking the pictures I noticed that the drain line had a pretty significant upward slope just before the sump so I trimmed it back a bit. It's making less noise now (to the point that it's tolerable) but if there's any way to make it even less noisy or silent I'd love to know.

Good call. Dialed the return pump back a bit and it's pretty good now. Can still hear the water spilling over the wall in the sump, but that's not anywhere near as annoying as that flushing sound.

In your first pic, it appears you have the elbow on backwards. The hole should be on the upright piece of pvc connected to the bulkhead. Unless I'm looking at it wrong.

I didn't set it up that way, his LFS did when they came and installed the tank for him. If I were to swap it I'd have to cut the elbow off and attach a new one as they cemented it on and I can't take it apart (I tried before I set it all up again). Their reasoning for it was as a siphon break, but apparently didn't realize that it was backwards. My last tank had dual overflows and both had the vent holes and siphon break over the vertical pipe.

It seems to be working just fine so I'd rather not mess with it but if I run into any issues I'll have to end up changing it. The sump they initially set him up with was some sort of DIY thing they slapped together that was a cross between a trickle filter and standard sump. It had cascading trays that he was supposed to put filter material in and it had very very little flow.

There is one on the return line. I put it in before I set everything up because they never put one in. My concern was how loud the drain line was because I've never had any issues with my previous dursos.

switch to a herbie. i couldn't get mine quiet with the durso. now it's completely silent. and don't glue the parts if you re-do. nice to be able to clean them

Yeah, I had considered doing a Herbie but wasn't entirely sure I wanted to run a line over the back of the tank for a return. It may happen still, who knows. There's nothing in the tank yet, it's just cycling now so there's still time.

The elbows are backwards. The one with the vent should be on top of the stand pipe. Noise is a combination of poor venting (swapping elbows will help) and too much volume. Flushing, where water level in the overflow goes up and down, is due to durso alternating between an open channel and siphon. When the siphon breaks it makes a load slurping sound.

Right, but I can't swap the elbow. It's glued on. I've got the pump dialed in to where I don't get the noise anymore, all I hear is the water in the sump.

Drill a hole in the top of both drain lines in the 90's coming off the vertical drain lines, that's where the vent should be. Do that and your noise will go away. Those holes in the pics are too big, start smaller. Make the hole larger according to the noise.

You need more air in the drain. This way you can turn the return up & benefit with better flow.

Managed to force the cap off and spun it around. Opened the hole that was there up a little and now it's cruising right along. Pump and sump is a bit louder as I was able to increase the output more (60-75% as opposed to 30-40%). I'll have to wait and see if it drives me crazy or not since it's in my bedroom.
