I just got into the sump game and my tank cannot be drilled so I had to get a hob overflow. From what I can tell right now it’s a stockman standpipe setup with a round filter floss on it. The standpipe is what looks like either 3/4 or one inch I haven’t measured it yet but it wobbles around inside the 1-1/4 inch bulkhead. I bought the smallest Maggie muffler they had I heard it helps but it wouldn’t fit into the overflow without force. And the standpipe is too small to even fit inside the muffler to get a good seal anyways. I was wondering if I could build a Durso small enough to fit but have good enough flow and still be silent. I’m

Either that or there’s got to be another way. I got the 800 gph eshopps hob overflow it’s nice but it’s pretty small.

Maybe just a bigger hob overflow would solve most of my problems. I have a hard time getting the return pump to match speeds with my overflow as well. The pump is a skimz pump and it’s set on the 4th lowest setting. I’m new to these types of setups I’ve ran aios for a while.

That might help
It’s not quiet as it is now but it’s not fast enough flow for my liking. And faster and it’s like a toilet flushing constantly

The periodic flushing sound means that the pump is oversized for the overflow. If you want to keep the pump flow and stay quiet you will need a larger overflow box.

It’s like flushing and gurgling from the overflow into the sump but if I slow the flow down on the overflow it won’t make this noise anymore

I had that HOB overflow on my last tank and built my own stockman pipe for the drain. It worked great, cut down the noise a lot and was cheap to build. Look it up online and you should find it easy to build.

It’s confusing to me how would the pump cause the flushing sound from the overflow
The amount of water going through a overflow can cause noise. The single drain overflows have very little options to quiet the noise. Hang-on over flows are sometimes even more difficult. Just keeping them working properly can be a issue.
Pretty much the only option is with a controllable dc pump or a ac pump with a valve.
That's why so many recommend herbie or bean animal designs on drilled tanks.
You could try experimenting with adding a second drain and a second u-tube.
It's going to take some work.

I gave up on single eeturn lines and instead recently purchased and plumbed a CPR CS-202 overflow with a Herbie overflow design. Perfect. Used gma reefing online as a guide.

Yeah, what you have doesn’t look like a stockman standpipe as there shouldn’t be any prefilter sponge around it. Probably safer to ditch the sponge as they do clog with can lead to flooding. Here is a video for how to build a stockman standpipe as mentioned above.

I’m trying to figure it out. There’s not enough room for another drain or that would probably help. I’ve got it quiet enough to sleep but would still be nice to almost silence it. I wish I could have just drilled the tank from the start but lfs said bad idea on the tank I have they think it’s tempered. So I just went with a hob overflow.
