I just setup a new Deep Blue tank with the durso overflow kit that came with it. The water level in the overflow box is so high that the water is flowing into the hole drilled in the top of the durso pipe. I'm wondering what is wrong and what I should do.

My first thought is the pump I have is too strong for the one durso drain. Sicce 7 states 1900 gph. Would a ball/gate valve to dial back help? I'm looking for ideas.

Your best bet is to dump the durso all together and research the Herbie method. Durso is obsolete

Durso isn’t obselete. Buy a gate valve. They are 1” bulkheads which won’t keep up with the pumps flow. Needs to be around 700GPH (what they are designed for).

Keep in mind, because it’s a single drain Durso set up, you never want to put a gate valve in to restrict drain flow in any way. Restricting the primary drain flow is for Herbies and Beananimals, where there are secondary and emergency drains should the primary clog. Keep the Durso unrestricted and wide open. Tune the Durso with a gate or ball valve for the return pump.

I wouldn’t try to restrict the drain, only the feed. Thanks for the input!

I think the Durso is straight forward and it came with the tank.

I have a bean animal on my primary reef tank. This is a tank for my husband and it was just easier for me to introduce him to his own tank with this type of setup.

I thought the Sicce 7 was an adjustable DC pump but I guess I missed something.

I think you got the AC version of the pump, the Sicce ADV 7.0 vs the DC version, the Sicce SDC 7.0. I actually prefer the reliability of AC pumps as returns. By using a valve to dial it back, you’ll aslso be saving a bit on energy consumption on a very energy efficient Sicce AC pump.

This is the one I ordered. Which is it?

Ahh, I see. Figures! I love how the photo shows a controller.

The pump is definitely too strong. You can dial it back with a gate valve.

I had the same issue when I upgraded pumps. I drilled out the holes a little bit and added a piece of tubing to it, siliconed it in place. This allowed more air to get into the drain.
