Bought one of the scaquariums and so far love it. I had to install a true union ball valve to lower the flow of the pump because my durso standpipe gurgled and gurgled like a toilet flush every so often in the sump. Wondering if reverse durso is better?
Or if the hole in the cap should be bigger or smaller?

Also tried air tube in it that made it worse I get the feeling the holes not big enough but what do you guys think? I know herbie and beanimal are better but it's a complete system with ore drilled holes and durso is in.

Unless you have an emergency drain in case of a obstruction, most don't recommend restricting flow on the main drain. If you want to quiet the flow, look into Maggie's muffler or make some sort of a reverse durso

I didn't restrict flow on drain just on pump.

Take a look at the Ken Stockman standpipe modification on Richard Durso's site. The Maggie Muffler is a ready made version of the Stockman which you can build DIY for a couple $$. I find the Stockman to be quieter than the Durso, less prone to blockage and flood from snails etc. and more compact so fits in overflow boxes easier.

I bought a predrilled tank and the overflow boxes were too small to do any of the drains I could find so I modified my own. Completely silent.

I will try to explain. Overflow is 3 feet tall. I cut a two foot long pipe and placed on bulkhead. Then glued a coupling to top of it. I then took a one foot section of pipe and drilled holes all around the top 3 or four inches (you have to do some measuring to figure out where exactly these holes should be). I then placed a larger diameter cap on top and I have a small hole drilled in top to keep water from gurgling. Don't glue this piece in. Just slide it in the coupling. You can remove easily if needed.

You must also cut a piece of pipe to glue into the cap. The length of this pipe should fall below the last line of drilled holes. (Mine is about 1-2" below) I hope this makes sense. I also drilled plenty of extra holes well above the water line in case of malfunction/clogging. I've had zero issues.

I also have a sc aquerium I ditched their durso cause I broke it lol. Made my own durso hade to drill a bigger hole. What I did is I ran the pump and kept drilling a bigger hole till I found the right size. But I did this as I did a leak test when I first got it. I didn't want to keep taking te plumbing apart just to drill a hole so I did it wile still in the overflow.

I have a SC tank too. I have the durso they provided. I just increased my pump gph and am getting the gurlge. what hole do I drill? the one on the top of the durso? thanks

I had the same problem as you did with my durso. All you need to do is increase the hole size. I'm not positive how big I ended up making it but I would guess it's a tad bigger then 1/2". If I'm not mistaken I've heard 5/8" is the magic number, I ended up just using part of my water change hose, stuffed it about 4" down the drain and comes about 3" out the top.

Trust me I tried everything I could think of to get rid of that toilet flushing sound. Make your hole bigger and save yourself the trouble. Open your pump back up as well. The air is competing with the water to go through the same direction as the hole in the top is to small to vent all the air

What I have found with my installed and working dursos is that if you increase the amount of water going into the overflow, the hole on top of the durso should be smaller not bigger. So start with no hole, you should get water level going up and down. Start with a 1/16" hole and increase until the water level remains steady in the overflow box. Then, it should be quiet. If you want to test what I'm saying,d place your finger covering the hole completely, then partially, and see what the water level does and where the gurgling stops or is reduced the most. A small male thread fitting x hose barb installed on top of the durso with tubing and a valve to control the amount of air works great too.

Rj made a great point with the valve. I tried a much bigger hole an it worked for me. I was going to do the valve thing but I would have had to buy one. I figured the bushing I used as my cap was like $1.27 so while I was at HD I'd pick up another one if the big hole didn't work.

we increased the hole a tiny bit to insert a standard air hose line, the small ones typically used. it helped a little but not enough for sure. tried a control valve on the air hose to limit it further, did not help actually made the water level drop faster in the overflow box. so may make a bigger hole tonight and see how that goes.

Seriously though save yourself the headache and drill a big hole. Worst case scenario you have to spend $1.50 on a new cap if you went way to big. I'll see if I can find a measurement of the tube I used and snap a pic of mine

Ok drilled hole to 3/8" still making same noise. How do you get rid of the gurgling from the end of the drain hose into the sump? And the waterfall noise in the overflow?
