i ordered a stand pipe from richard durso's website but it did not come with a whole drilled in the top. the soonest i can do this my self is tomorrow. if i turn the system on is the pipe still gonna work?

It won't work correctly but depending on how much water you are pushing through the tank it may work but will more than likely be very loud. My guess is it will sound like your toilet is being flushed every 30-60 seconds.

If you need to run the tank tonight I would say take the cap off completely if it's not glued. This may still be a bit loud but certainly not as loud. It will also be safer than running with no hole at all.

As @kschweer stated, you most likely will get a pulsing siphon going. That is, it will siphon down the water in the overflow until the siphon is broken. The water will rise in the overflow until the siphon begins again....and this will continue. Noisy and potentially flooding if the siphon doesn't start quick enough.

problem solved i may not have a working drill but i did have a wood carver so i just melted a hole through the cap and then shaved off any excess with a knife and sand paper.
