Has anyone tried just drilling horizontally straight through the side of the cap and pipe together and used it as a rotating air valve? Just offset or align the holes by turning the cap to adjust airflow. A touch of white silicone grease to make it slide nicely. It seems so easy that I must be missing something. What is wrong with my idea?

As long as its above the water level I dont see an issue

Well, you are gonna have 2 holes which may be too much air intake to begin with. Restriction( smaller hole ) causes water level to drop along the standpipe. If you restrict them both as you say by off setting the holes they might be more prone to clogging. Salt creep Clogging with cause the water to drop too much and noise. So I’ve always gone with one hole on top of the cap. Start small and work larger diameter until the water level is about half of the tee. Also don’t like silicone no where in the plumbing. Sorry I miss read, 1 hole on the side but still harder to clear of salt creep clog
