I am setting up a new 80 gallon reef ready that is designed for durso overflow. With the positioning of the bulkhead, I basically have a straight drop into the drain section of my sump. If I just use sch 40 pvc and run a straight drop into the sump, will that cause more or less noise than a slight curve?

Also, if a straight drop is good, will rigid plumbing be as quiet as flex tubing? Id prefer to use all rigid plumbing on this build but I'm also worried about the noise level.

Thanks

I don't think it matters if it drops straight down or not or the type of plumbing. What matters is the induction of the right amount of air with the amount of water you got flowing. Start with tiny hole on the durso and work up till the water level maintained and noise is reduced.

Replace the Durso/RR with a Herbie and use over the back return. See my recent thread in the do it yourself forum.

You can do this, however, I have been running dual dursos and using the returns as intended on a 120 gal for years. I have never had any problems or overflowing. I do protect the overflows though, so that there is no chance of anything big going over the falls and going into the durso drain.

I wasn't speaking so much as to the Durso setup - it works fine. But more to converting to a full-siphon style drain. Full-siphon is more volume and dead silent. I ran both my megaflows for years as a Durso but just this week finally converted them to Herbie and am loving it!

I've looked at the herbie and thought about it but I'm a little nervous about setting it up correctly. I've never had anything other than an HOB overflow so I don't really know much about all of these different overflow options.

I'm in a bit of a hurry because I'm temporarily keeping my current tank at someone else's house and I need to get all of the contents moved over from it and the old tank torn down ASAP so I don't know if I have time to figure out a new overflow system or not.

I would like to keep the new system as quiet as possible though since it is going to be in our living room.
