Hello, I am 14 and setting up my first reef tank. I love tangs but since my tank is a 40b, it’s to small. I was wondering if some species of dwarf angel would be a good substitute? I want a softie reef so idk if it would nip at soft corals. Flame Angel is my favorite but any species will do. Thanks for reading!

Go for it. Dwarf angels are beautiful and add a lot of movement in a tank that size. Some may nip at LPS and softies but nothing major IME.
Even if I touched a few, I still couldn’t be mad lol. I won’t have this tank without a McCosckers flasher wrasse, so would they be compatible?

Speaking of comparability, let me throw you my whole stock list lol.
- 2 ocellaris clownfish
- dwarf angel
- McCosckers flasher wrasse
- Royal Gramma
- Algae Blenny
- Yellow Watchman Goby
- Maybe Firefish (Dont know if it would get bullied)

Flame Angel is one of good choices for a reef Aquarium, there will be few harmless nipping here and there, but not actually eating the corals.

Should be also finw with wrasses and many other fish, however you can't add another dwarf angel, for your tank size you can only add one angel.

Didn’t plan on having 2 so that’s fine.

List looks fine to me, the Firefish may got bullied by the Royal Gramma
Try to add the firefish first so it get established without any bulling from other fish

In a 40 gallon i would not keep with an algae blenny.
Both will compete for rock space and food. They can bicker, sometimes quite baddly.

I would stick to flame, coral beauty, cherub or pygmy.
The pygmy is the most aggressive of my list. Add last, can go after any and all new additions regardless of size.

I may be old school but that seems like way too many fish to me. I usually stick to about one fish per 10 gallons of water volume. Obviously some fish contribute more of a bioload than others but this general rule has always served me well.

The bioload wouldn’t be to big. I feel like you could add more than one fish per 10 gallons.

What would be a good substitute for the algae blenny? I like molly millers if that would work.

i find their algae eating skills sub par imo. They eat some when young but as they age much less so. Can nip the odd coral. Can be aggressive to other fish that want to call their rocks home. Dwarf angels always ate far more algae than they do for me. I love their personalities to watch I just dont care to keep them for the reasons above.

Not to hijack... would a melanurus wrasse be a suitable fit in place of the flasher wrasse?

And people wonder why they have constant algae issues and sudden crashes. The amount of fish in peoples tanks these days is insane.

Good luck with your fishes, be sure to add them slowly and keep up on your water changes.

I have a Bi-Color Blenny that is not a grazer, small and has personality.

Long ago also had a Starry Blenny that was pretty cool; a lot more girth though lol. Did eat off the glass, didn’t notice much rock grazing. He was one of my favorites.

Not to be rude, but why? I like them but I’ve heard they can be a risk to inverts. Also the flasher stays smaller.

I would totally rather have a longnose hawkfish but they are a risk to inverts

Just curious! They looked pretty so was an honest curiosity. Just trying to learn ahead of time :)
