I'm trying to decide on a dwarf angel for my 40 fusion. I like the...

Flame
Bicolor
Midnight
Lemonpeel

Which of these would be best sorted for a mixed reef?

I believe its all about luck with the dwarf angel you get. Some will pay no attention to the coral while others will nip or completely destroy certain types.

Aggression in a 40g may also be a concern, take a look at the pygmy cherub. I had one that was great, it was a lps dominant reef and never had a problem. Even the cherub can be aggressive, but the larger dwarfs will prove to be even more so.

I’ve had success with flame and coral beauty, in a Mixed reef I have lobos Acans and a clam all good, right now I have a potters 2 months in still not eating but he has definitely established my 75g as his territory

I housed a coral beauty in my 40 breeder. Rose bubble tip anemones, Kenya Trees, green star polyps, misc zoa's, lots of hammers. I picked him up when he was small. Other tank fish are mated clowns, Azure damsels, pair of pajama cardinals and lawnmower blenny. Everyone got a long. Only thing I noticed is that the coral beauty slept one of the hammers on the sand. So out of everything it was a bit worse for ware around some of the branches. Other than that he didn't eat or nip at anything. It was the perfect size more or less and seemed to do well although I didn't have a lot of rock I guess.

I also had a flame angel years ago in my 100 gallon. That guy was a beast and would nip at anything LPS. Really loved my elegance so I removed him. Pretty fish and may try a pair now that I have a 210 gallon tank. Not sure but that is my experience owning a flame (bad luck with mine) and coral beauty (good luck with mine).

Although mine did happen to nip, he had a great temperament. He was an African Flameback Angel, gorgeous fish. That’s my suggestion

You can try out a Flame or a coral beauty, and remember every fish is different, one individual can be safe another one from same species can wreak havoc.

Of the 4 listed, the only one that I would consider is the flame.
Personally, I wouldn’t have a SW/reef tank without a flame angel, one of my ‘must have’ fish since 1973.

I wouldn't pick any of those for a 40 gallon tank. Flames and Midnights can be downright aggressive to tank mates, especially in a smaller tank. I had one in a 36 gallon who was a complete jerk. Bicolors tend to be more delicate than other Dwarf Angels and are bigger and the Lemon Peels tend more often than not to be coral munchers (then again they can all be coral munchers). Personally in a 40 gallon I would go with a Pygmy Angel (aka Cherubfish) as they are a bit smaller and aren't as prone to nipping at corals as most of the other dwarf angels. They can be assertive though so keep that in mind.
