Hi everyone, there's this dwarf fuzzy lionfish in the lfs and i just love the look of it and was wondering if it would be ok in a 12 gallon long tank.

I believe i know the answer.

The eventual plan would be to put it in my 100 gallon reef but am currently trying to get nitrates down as i wasnt able to do water changes for months. It would have to be in the 12 gallon long for about 2 or 3 months there are no other fish in it.
Thanks in advance.

If nitrates are already a concern a lionfish is a bad tank addition, especially in a tank that size. If you look at the mouth of the lionfish, you'll notice its large. Indicating it eats large items. It also poops large. And the amount of waste that comes from uneaten food is also large. Even the eaten food seems to create its own waste as it's eaten. All these large things in a tank that's so small.

So to answer your question of would it be ok in your 12 gallon, I'd say maybe. So long as it's very small, the only living creature in your tank, you understand it's venemous and you don't excessively feed (including removing excess krill, etc) and as long as you stay on top of water changes. Maybe. But it's a long shot. I'm only encouraged by the lack of movement I've seen out of even the largest lionfish In aquariums. But your lack of filtration at this time makes me think it's the wrong decision for your tank and will certainly be a waste of money and fish.

Yeah thanks mate. I didnt really think there would be much hope but thought it was worth a shot.
The reason my nitrates are high is because only until recently could i afford an ro/di unit and was using like 40 litres to top off my tank and it wasnt even ro di it was just ro.
It was just impossible to do any real water changes.
Wish i was i n the states would have order one from brs in 2 seconds.

Just to be clear:

1. You have an established 100 gallon. It has nitrate issues that you are working on.

2. You have a 12 gallon with no fish in it.

If this is the case, I don't have a problem getting the lion. You can use the time in the 12 gallon to QT and get it eating frozen food.

Get a lid, I was unaware they were jumpers until I found mine on the floor in the morning. I even had a lid, I just didn't know it was needed for a lion, so it wasn't on.
Second on the jumper... although I believe another fish was pestering it.
