Dyed corals?

How does one go about doing this? Im not gonna try it, but I was just sitting here thinkin?

Do you just get a bowl put some food coloring in w saltwater and place the coral in there or what?

Guess ill throw some Xenia in with some blue food color and see before I trash it later this weekend j/k

bleach the coral out insane first. then dye it! but i wouldnt advise it if you want to stay friends with the reefing community.

yeah arnt there colors beutiful lol but i wouldnt see the harm in some xenia but i dought it would hold

Saw a guy on SWF a long time ago, bought like a orange leather, or something outrageous like that and paid a fortune. It started decaying overnight and he had to do the huge water changes and keep things from dying.

Yeah, the problem is when they dye corals it usually causes the corals to expel most of their zoanthellae which causes most corals to die. I still see plenty of dyed corals at my wholesalers though, so I guess there's still a market for them.

How can you tell? Just outrageous colors?

I aint gonna do it im just courious. How do you bleach the color? Stick it in bleach?

Yeah and they usually lose that bright color after awhile. Anything that looks really unnatural usually is, like neon yellow toadstools, pagoda/cup corals, sebae anemones, magenta colt corals, hot orange, pink, and yellow long tentacle/ritteri anemones, etc. I've heard that they just inject them with food coloring I think, I'm pretty sure its not necessary to bleach the coral, that happens later.

Sticking it in bleach would definately kill it. lol Maybe if you could find an all natural type of dye you could do it without hurting the coral. ;]

this is so weird. i have never even heard of people coloring corals. i dont know it just seems soooo wrong.

yeah i saw a pink toadstool the other day and was like say what!

i did it to a couple kenya tree frags just for fun. i used easter egg dye , purple. put tank water and some drops of dye. add the frag and waiting till is opened and suxed some of the water in. took out, rinsed litly with tank water and added back to tank. the dye doesnt stay. fades after a couple months. i also know they dye some of the pink leathers you can get. even them them after a couple months they look normal or white.

that's nothing how about the freshwater fish that are tattooed! isn't that crazy ever seen one of those? i saw a parrot fish that said i love you on it!!

It's just to get the product moving faster and into our hands just because it's some insane color. I have seen all kinds of softies that are dyed many different colors, such as, lime green, pink, blue, even purple. Not right in my book and some retail stores that i stopped in regularly when i lived in Fl would have these and not tell the unsuspecting customer that it was indeed dyed and fade in the coming months. Then the customer would stop by and ask "Why are some of my corals that i bought from you ugly now?" and the response from the owner was, "It must be your lighting or something, here, we just got these new lights in, their only $500. Your corals will be looking better each day with this baby." LOL...just trying to make a quick buck...
