Hey guys, I recently came across a free 37 high tank. Is it possible to remove the plastic rims, to covert it to a rimless?

What is the glass thickness? Is it tempered?

I wouldnt try it with 1/4", but let someone from #reefsquad help out!

#reefsquad is a "team" of really helpful people who get an alert when the # "reefsquad" is used

no- they will see this thread, and reply if they are able to help out- give it till the morning, and they will reply

Lol yea using the # reefsqaud will sent a notification to anyone who watches that # ( I just got like 5 of them because you all kept using it :P ). As far as the OP question, no 1/4 is much too thin and would be a very bad idea to AMD convert to a rimless tank

For reference, my rimless tank has a 20” height and uses 1/2” thick glass. A 37 gallon tall aquarium has a 23” height. Without the rim for support, the 1/4” glass is way too thin to handle the outward pressure that a filled tank will exert. Those tanks are built with rims for a reason. Keep it as is with the rim and enjoy your free tank as it was designed. IMO removing the rim will lead to quite the expensive mess.

No! and above

Agreed...leave the rim!

Yup, need to leave the rim. I would even go so far as to say that 1/4" is pushing the limits on a 23" high tank with a rim.

the glass flexes causing stress on the seams and the panels. plus there is not enough surface area for the silicone to grab.

people get away with 10g tanks and some 20gl tanks but always with a risk the bigger you go.

I had a standard 75 gallon that I chose to remove / cut out the center brave part of the trim. It caused the tank to begin bowing. I can't imagine removing the entire trim on a taller tank unless the thickness was 1/2" or more. I would not do it. The only way I think you could make it work is to add a eurobrace around it if you like the look of that better than the trim piece. But that may be more work and a bit of cost you may not want to fool with. Then again this hobby makes all of us do crazy things in the name of reaching reefing nirvana!
