hey guys due to some family issues i havent been able to do any water changes for maybe 3 weeks. i usually do a 5gal a week change on my 46 gal reef tank. i have one acan thats clearly dying and one of my chalices fell down behind everything and i didnt see it and it loks almost completly dead aswell. now let me tell you where i think my issue may be. i also run a canister filter. it had purigen, chemipure elite, and carbon as well as just regular filter media. this wasnt serviced for longer than i care to admit if i had to guess closer to 2 months than not. theres a fair amount of green hair algea aswell which leads me to believe my canister was skunking the water with phosphate. my nitrate measured 0. ph was 8.3 calcium was about 420-440.

i did a 10 gal change. i also removed the canister filter completly and i took the aquamaxx hob skimmer apart and cleaned it. i left the 2 dying coral in there hoping they might make it but i would be suprised if they do. i have 70lbs of good live rock 40 lbs of sand. i have a hob refugium i made with a little live rock and algae growing in it which seems to be working pretty well.

do you guys think that i should just leave the canister off the tank? would my live rock, sand and aquamaxx hob skimmer be good enough filtration for this system? i only have a hawkfish, a nemo clown fish for the kids, a small blue damsel that i cant catch aswell as a small black and white striped damsel that i cant catch. oh and a small psudochromis think its called.

i dont feed alot at all. i feed the coral maybe twice a week or so. i might get a sea hare to clean up the algae. any suggestions on my setup? is there anything i can do to try to save my two dying corals?

I have a 50 gallon tank. I use a fluval canister and haven't had any issues. For about 9 years I've done monthly water changes of 10 gallons. I have a acan that I thought was dying and has come around and grown more heads.

If you are running floss are any other type media yes it needs to be replaced often in a canister filter. If you are using phosban or carbon that is okay. We don't recommend canister filters because they can become nitrate factories, Protein skimming and good circulation is what is best.
