Dying or splitting green hairy mushroom?

Hey all. Just wanted some advise if this guy is dying or splitting. I've seen some people around here say both. This happened over the night. It used to be pretty meaty and stood out, and now it's thin and has these white coils coming out from the edges of the tears.

It doesn't look well. I've had 2 that are now 5. They puff up so big I never noticed them splitting until it was done and the lights were off and they shrink up. They are tough though, so don't give up on him.

UPDATE! The mushroom just split into about 7 heads. I wasn't able to get all of them in the picture. Thanks to all who helped.

I have those in my tank they split all the time!
