Hey guys, I’m new to reef keeping, today I picked up a zoa colony from my LFS, half of the colony was closed up at the shop, but they told me that it would open up later on. After I got it home I dipped it in coral dip and freshwater, then I also dipped it in a 50/50 saltwater/hydrogen peroxide mix. Both of these dips lasted about 5 minutes each. There was a bunch of algae growing on the “unhealthy” side, and a couple bristleworms did come off during the peroxide dip. My concern is that the healthy half of the colony looks really nice and plump, the other side looks very skinny and frail. This is my first zoa colony and I’m just wondering, is it sick? Dying? And if so can it be saved or am I better off returning it to the LFS? Any input is appreciate and as always, happy reefing!

Hello, the side that looks healthy should very well survive. The other half does look pretty beat up. I think you did well with those dips. But its probably not enough to do it once. I'm not too sure if it's too much to dip every day but it looks like that is what it will need. I recommend to dip it with iodine this time around, also try to lightly scrub the unhealthy side, just so that the algae and brown stuff comes off.

Whenever I come across a really beat up looking zoa I dip it in iodine for anywhere between 15-45min depending on the severity. I also make the water so dark I can almost not see the zoa. I haven't tried dipping it every day though, so i don't know if there are any consequences.

I like this video for ref.
