I've been meaning to make a quick and dirty guide on setting up Dynamic DNS. Dynamic DNS gives you the ability to setup a free DNS name, ie: TJDtest.no-ip.info, and access that name and not the IP address. This is perfect for you guys who have an Apex or other controller, camera, etc you would like to access away from your house.

This just covers the setup of Dynamic DNS and not the firewall rules needed to access your equipment, that's coming soon.

If you need some help, just let me know! Configuring Dynamic DNS | THE JOSH DAVIS

great guide Josh!!

unfortunately because router manufactures are not up with the times dyndns may be your only option.. and their free acount requires the user to log in monthly.

yeah it has it's flaws, but no-ip seems to be the best I've tried for free services. Now if you own your own domain name, things are a bit easier until your IP changes, then you have to manually updated it.

I ended up paying for DynDNS' basic service ($15/year? or something like that) and just have my router keep my public IP updated. Works well!

Nice. I float between a Sonicwall NSA 2400 or a Cisco ASA at home for my firewall so I run the app and just let it update, then I CNAME a much easier domain name to it.
