The day has finally come!
I've officially started on my tank build, after long deliberation and (hopefully) some solid decisions.

I have been lurking around this community for a while, soaking up as much knowledge as I can. Let me first say that his forum/community is absolutely fantastic, and I'm really excited to be able to now participate more. Many great, nice, and knowledgeable people in this forum.
I'd like to give a shout out to @Shabalaba . Shaba, to me, exemplifies what this community is and should be. I had seen a post from him in another thread, and decided to private message him with a question. A prompt and detailed answer was returned, and additional questions from myself ensued. What I'm trying to point out is that this is my unique experience within this forum, however, it is not unique within this community, rather indicative of the type of help, support, and time that members here provide to others.

So, before I start laying out the down-and-dirty for my build, I'll tell you a little about myself.
I had my first saltwater tank back in the early-80's. This was a 55 gallon beast with an under-gravel filter, crushed coral substrate, and even a dead sea fan for decoration. This was a fish-only tank, and I can still see the Copperband Butterfly, Clownfish, Cleaner Wrasse, and Queen Angel in that tank. Unfortunately, that tank suffered a catastrophic failure with a break in that back panel that ran in an arc from the lower left to the lower right. It's amazing how fast 55 gallons can dump out of a tank. All inhabitants survived, and were re-homed to another hobbyist.

Fast forward many years, with a lot of stuff in between that wouldn't thrill you, nor keep your interest, and we arrive at my current build.
So, I am not really interested in a mixed reef, or display style of tank. I am really interested in corals...kinda period.
So this build, while I am going to try and make it look very nice, like a 'display' setup, will be a frag system. I really just want to grow out some corals and have my very own coral garden.

Here's the setup:
Tank: 34 gallon Deep Blue rimless (36x18x12)
Overflow: Internal Eshopps S (gonna drill the tank)
Sump: Trigger Crystal Cube 18
Skimmer: Skimz Monster Mini SN127
Return Pump: Sicce Silent 3.5 660gph with an RFG at the end of the line
Powerhead: Icecap 1k Gyre
ATO: Tunze Osmolator 3155 with a 5 gallon reservoir
Lights: 2x AI Prime HD with mounts
Controller: Apex
Dosing Pump(s): TBD
Stand: homemade

I decided to do this thread as a build-in-progress, and document my way through. So if you've stayed to this point through this very verbose thread, unfortunately I don't have a ton of pics and a finished product for you.....yet.
All of the above listed gear is scheduled for delivery on Tuesday.
I did get started on the stand, so at least I have something to show at this time.

The stand is made up with 1x3's to create the inner skeleton of the stand/cabinet. I will be skinning it with 1/2 birch ply.

Still some more bracing to do, however, I am waiting on gear to map out my space appropriately.
This is my first time using a Kreg pocket jig, and I am extremely impressed with the ease of use, and most importantly, the strength of the joints.

So, yes, it has begun. I hope to make good progress on this over the next few weeks, and have it wet by the end of the month.
I promise my updates won't contain nearly as much diarrhea of the keyboard as this one. ;Blackeye

Oh man ur stand scares me a little, might wanna sheet with a 3/4" ply. Glass tanks carry all their weight around the edges and corners.

WELCOME! Nothing but super nice people in this hobby!

Slowly, but surely here.....
With work, I've been relegated to weekend work on my build, and unfortunately, the Colorado weather has only given me one good day over each of the past two weekends.
However, I was able to make some progress.
Here's where I'm at now.

Stand-3.jpg

WOW...I measure correctly! :)
Stand-5.jpg

I left enough room next to the sump to either fit the ato container (presently in front of the sump), or dosing containers.

I've got the trim for around the top cut and dado'd (<-sp?). I also have the front skin cut to size, I just need to measure out and cut my door openings.
Then it will be doors, finish trim, fill, sand, and stain.....stain for the outside, I'll paint the inside white.
Hopefully the weather can hold out for next weekend and I can have the build portion of this stand complete.
My idea with this stand is to have the 'wet' portion on the left, and the 'dry' electronics section on the right.
I'm still trying to figure out my electronics layout for the right section, so that it is as functional and accessible as I can get it.

Thank you for the comments.

Looking great so far. Seems like you have a really good plan/layout!

Hopefully!
The 'wet' side, I'm not really concerned with. I like the space I have.
The 'dry' side is where I'm busy doing most of my thinking as to how to layout everything, and still make the wiring accessible.
We'll see how it turns out, but I appreciate the vote of confidence!

Some more progress...
Construction on the stand is more-or-less complete. I still have to lay out my electrical side, and figure that out, so there will most likely be some shelves, panels, sliders, something.....

I wish I years of carpentry skills, but hey....she's coming together.
I'll be filling holes, then painting the inside and staining the outside.

I also plan to get the tank drilled next, then I will be cutting holes in the top-back for the plumbing.

I'll confess....I had two beautiful weekend days to work on this, but I couldn't stay away from Reef Ed in Denver on Saturday.....even though I can't buy anything yet!

Another good step forward! Stand really came out nice I think. Just got back from a coral show myself. I'll restrain myself from posting pictures of them in my tank ;) . Keep up the good work!!

More updates after the weekend, however, my daughter thought this was a good idea......

They are still small frags, but they'll be colonies in no time!
Hey....at least the tank is drilled now!

A good idea it was ;Cat

Must be getting close!

Well...closer....
Still finishing on the stand. It's been taking a bit, but I'm getting it the way I want, and I guess that's what counts.
After the stand is finished up, I think the rest will roll pretty quickly.

Hey, @Bmasculine , thanks for checking in.

I actually have quite a few updates, and will most likely update this thread at the end of this long weekend.
The stand is all completed, just finishing up some paint, and staining the outside this weekend.
Hopefully I'll be able to get everything mounted up and plumbed next week/weekend.

@Dystinction Great stand build!!!

I did something very similar but stopped at the 1" x 3" framing (linked in my sig), not sure how to skin yet as it is the centerpiece of the house!

Had a thought last night here: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/t-a-r-d-i-s-blue-50-gal-build.396007/#post-4763173

It was also my first time using the Kreg Jig and I was equally impressed!

@o00brandon00o
Thanks for checking in!

Yeah, I'm sold on the Kreg Jig. I have a feeling that it will be used on many future projects. The dowel fillers, are also really slick and turn out really nice once glued in and sanded down.

Skinning the stand is gonna have to be an aesthetic choice, as to how it fits in to where you have it. With this I'll also add in the trim and door design as well.
My office (where my tank is going) has some metal pieces and piping DIY pieces. I was going to patina some sheet metal and incorporate it into the doors on the stand, however, my patina efforts were not satisfactory. I ended up just going with Maple ply, and Poplar trim pieces that are all going to receive a Walnut-color stain.

Don't EVER come up with an idea like that again! If my wife were to hear of that idea, I'd be rebuilding my entire stand! (and probably the entire office) :)

@Dystinction I am a huge fan of a simple, clean stained wood finish! Great work!

Interesting observation: between the MP10 on short pulse and the auto-doser that runs every hour the noise is similar enough to the T.A.R.D.I.S. engines to pull something like that off!!!

I may very well be the king of going slow......
However, I have made some progress, and the light at the end of the tunnel for the stand build is getting bright.

Added in my false wall for the electronics on the 'dry-side' of the stand.

Finished the interior painting, and got the outside stained. I still have to poly coat the outside.

Stand-3.jpg

I WAS on-track to having the stand totally completed over this long Memorial Day weekend, however, I decided to use some liquid rubber for the top of the stand....and....well......
Stand-6.jpg

Stand-5.jpg

Hey, the stuff is what it is, I just could not get it to lay flat and smooth for me, which is what I wanted for the top. There will be about a 3" 'rim' of top that shows around the sides and front of the tank, and I want that to look good.
Spreading this stuff was a nightmare for me. I think it is best poured, then tilted around to spread it out, rather than trying to use a roller, or even a trowel...if that makes sense. The top of the stand is a larger surface area to cover, so attempting to get it all smoothed out just wasn't happening for me.
....so it looks like I'll be re-cutting a top and going a different route for finishing it off. Luckily, I have enough 3/4" ply for one more go at the top.
Meh....you live and you learn, I guess.....not a huge show-stopper or anything.

Well, I'm off to cut another top, and get some poly laid down on the outside of the stand.
Right now, I am still optimistically shooting for next weekend to get the tank plumbed, connected, and wet......we'll see....:)
