Easiest Most Profitable Coral (Frag Tank)

From your experience, what is an extremely easy beginner, fast growing coral for a frag tank? I was going to set up my first saltwater tank, a frag tank, and maybe break even selling some extra frags to my LFS.

Zoas, shrooms, any polyp or soft coral will grow like weeds and very fast.

There are several types of mushrooms that grow quit large— as in dinner plate size— but they don’t seem to be readily available in an LFS. If I were starting out looking to grow something in a beginner frag tank that would sell/trade well, I’d go for that. Best wishes.

I'd focus on getting the tank set up and running perfectly and then focus on a frag tank.... zoas would be ur best bet

Find out what your LFS would want/need.

Back in the day I grew xenia like a weed, probably made $300 store credit, but there were times that the LFS didn't want any....like in the summer. Then it seemed all the local reefers had graduated to higher end corals and I rarely see xenia for sale locally.

Most states require a license to sell fish and coral. You might want to look into that before you make the investment on a frag tank. There is a big difference in trading coral for credit/goods and selling for profit.

Easy fast growing corals are the least profitable and most readily available. Your LFS will likely just give you a small amount of store credit for random zoas/softies. Even a fast growing acro, like a Red planet, won't fetch you much... Also, if this is your first SW tank, man, you'll have a lot of trials and tribulations for awhile!

No doubt the best person to ask is the person that will be buying/trading with you. If it is the LFS then ask them.

You will probably find certain corals grow super fast in your specific tank for whatever reason.

I have this one pink paly which is nothing special but it's always growing. I'm happy to sell the frags for a couple of bucks each as long as you take them all. So if I drop off 100 of them I can come home with 1 or 2 nice pieces and I'm happy. Only expense is the glue and plugs since I'm growing lots of other stuff as well.

Historically pom pom xenia is the most popular coral despite the fact some people genuinely despise it.

If you're running the frag tank on the same system, I'd hold off and see what your tank naturally grows well.
Also, decent MACNA video just out on the BRS channel about hobbyist-scale aquaculture.

That's probably true. Still, good to plan ahead. You'll want mother colonies to frag, so your long term plan might affect how you set up, aquascape, and stock your DT.

True, true, my dad had a large saltwater tank and will be helping me out tough, I was probably going to wait about 6 months to get coral anyway. I was going to start with a clown goby.

It would just be a hobby thing to cut down on some costs, definitely not expecting serious profit, if I break even with the cost of the tank within a year or two I’m happy.

I would expect 5-7yrs if at all as a hobbiest. Get to the point where you can trade for goods. You may at a point get to be part time income. But as an actual income youll need a facility. Baby step first. A journey starts with one foot step

I’ve only had a frag tank for 12 months so I consider myself new to the hobby. I started growing and cutting rainbow BTAs, then black widows, then got a Colorado Sunburst. I feed them and cut a few nems every 6 weeks or so. I now have 8 CSBs in my tank that I can split and sell to a LFS at a wholesale price. I've already made enough $ (store credit) to buy a brand new Waterbed 110.4 DX. In 3 months I can have 32 CSBs growing and, at full retail, that's more than $20K. I did take my time setting up my frag tank, I didn't rush it. I listened and read from many of our peers on these forums, thanks BTW.

I just got an Arizona Sunburst Myself at RAPNY... I didn't find a decent price Colorado.

Anyway, how often you spot feed if you don't mind me asking?
