Hello guys,

What is the easiest way to setup a zoas propagation system? Just hydroponic tray + stand + skimmer + light ?

Yep, but still fishes in the propagation tray so should be some sort of technical filtration. If anyone have something like this setup, please share a pic. Thanks!

Could probably just have a good water change schedule and be okay without the skimmer. The less you spend the more you make!

Thanks! I need to rephrase my question: What is the best propagation system option: Hydroponic trays or there is something else?

You could use a Rubbermaid tote if you want lol. I would go with those trays or even a shallow glass tank because according to BRS investigates a lot of light reflects back into the tank off the glass

Yep, I think from the white trays it should reflect very well as well. Would be really cool if someone can share some pictures.

I wish i could share some insight as i have not started on my zoa build yet. But im using wood and pond liner pretty much to frame my frag tank. Will have a mini fuge sump area built in. A wall with two opening and a powerhead pushing water out on one side to create flow through the area. Very simple and cheap concept. Only reason for no sump is its going in the laundry room in the custom shelfing.

Like this but im aiming for something much cleaner looking

You don't need a skimmer. Weekly water change has worked for me nicely. I do use a small sump, but I don't think it is needed. Just have some live rock pieces in there for some biological filtration. I even use these liverock pieces for zoa/paly growout surfaces. It will also provide the additional hiding areas for the fish. I have a small yellow choris wrasse and an algae blenny in my tank. I have multiple levels of clear frag rack with the rock pieces under. I like the different levels because not all zoas/palys like the same amount of light and flow. This way I can find where they like to grow the best by putting frags of the same one in different areas. Shallow trays don't give you that option, but I'm not saying shallow trays don't work either. Go bigger than you think you want/need, it gets a little addicting. 30g Deep Blue tank
