Ebay LED Fixtures

Bill I think everyone has their own view as to what they want in an led fixture. My diy crees have a channel of royal blues that I use for moon lites after all the other led's shut down for the night, and although the whites may have a full spectrum I like a few reds, greens and warm whites to make the corals look as natural as possible to the viewer. As far as normal lighting goes I prefer 2 to 4 royal blues to each cool white to give the tank that deep water blue look and my corals open much better if I'm not providing a lot of white led's. The whites tend to bleach the corals much easier than the blues do if you run a fairly high intensity.

That sounds like a good mix.

As far as the Whites Bleaching more than the 450nm Royal Blue is an interesting observation.

I think it all has to do with the intensity. Only speaking of my own observations I find a large amount of blue light allows the corals to open well yet a similar amount of whites tend to bleach them out. I'd be interested in how others have experienced the growth difference with a change from white to blue since my views may not be what others are seeing.

I cannot speak for other manufacturers but...

Made In The USA is still viable.

Cree Manufactures Here In The USA. I prefer These as I know they are not counterfeits.

Quality optics are made here as well as the UK

Only the Drivers and Power Supplies are very hard to source domestically and be cost effective.

Personally if possible I prefer to avoid products from Mainland China if possible.

Bill
I like Japanese power supplies and drivers. I have a power supply on my computer that the parts are made in japan. Still going since 2009'.
Affordability seems to drive some to Chinese products. I'll stick with my AquaRays for now. One of the Top 5 manufactures. In time there will be more. Bill I support your post here over those who prefer China quality.(you get what you pay for) Correct PUR over PAR.

I think my words are being misconstrued. I'm by no means saying I prefer any manufacturer. I was only saying that the majority of lighting fixture components are made in china, low or high quality. I mean come on Cree isn't the only good led manufacturer and I'm pretty sure meanwell drivers aren't made in the USA?

I don't know that quality is the real issue here. Not every hobbyist can afford the highest quality out there. For some of us we either make our own equipment or have to purchase the cheapest components out there simply because of cost. It's easy to defend with "just as good as" but in most cases it isn't. Sure I'd love to have ten thousand dollars worth of top of the line equipment for my reef tank, but I'm not sure I would even if I could afford it. Many of us rely on our own labor and observations to keep our tanks running and get by with a minimum of equipment. Is there anything wrong with enjoying a hobby with only the simplest set ups and isn't success at that level a great achievement. When is a quality light a good investment when it costs three to six times what a cheap fixture costs.

Everyone's opinion of cheap is different but if you look back to my first post in this thread I stated that if your looking for a led fixture for 100$ or less then these Ebay fixtures are what your looking for (unless your looking to diy possibly)
I have nothing against these lights and for the reefer on a budget they're great! I've owned a few different fixtures though and I wouldn't say they're all the same. Much better growth from my Radions VS the ebay fixtures. But then again I'd choose the ebay fixtures over kessils so I guess your could say I'm weird. Lol[emoji4]
Also I completely agree that you don't need all high end equipment to have a great reef tank and I ran my tank bare minimum for awhile. Again I have seen better results since I've upgraded some things but I didn't NEED them. I also don't use higher end equipment as a replacement for husbandry in anyway, if anything I do more water changes and upkeep now then I did before.

Why is it that when it comes to lighting so many people become defensive, put off, annoyed, aggressive or ??? etc. Be straight when expressing you opinions. For me You buy the best you can afford and hope it does the job well enough for YOU. Cool ??

PS: Don't ask a question that you don't want the answer or Express an opinion you don't want someone to disagree with. (the only issues I see are those that attack others personally if they differ in opinion) Cheers to All hobbyist trying to grow and support us.

Scardall jump in if you wish but I didn't see any posts that I found to be annoying or aggressive. To me we were all expressing our personal views on lighting and nothing more and I believe most of us were interested in others views on the topic.

Who are you refereeing to? I didn't think anyone was getting defensive, put off, annoyed and or aggressive? Just a few people discussing their opinions.

I don't think the majority of people on here are here to try and tell anyone what to do. After years in this hobby most of us would like to share our personal experiences and also learn from others who may have a better way of doing things. Of course for those new who ask for help we all like to encourage others and try to make suggestions to make it a more pleasurable and successful hobby.

No not the majority,I just been on several threads on lighting lately and lost it for a moment. My Bad. Like you I'm just trying to help and sometimes it feels as thou I'm bashing my head on a wall. I let a few get to me. MY BAD. Thanks Harold Green.

Guess it was me? Probably my own fault for talking about quality of products from countries I know little about.
I still don't think I was being argumentative or even challenging others opinions? Idk? I just thought my statement was taken differently then I intended so I tried to correct my self.
Anyways I wasn't trying to say anyone was wrong or right and I definitely didn't think I was the one getting aggressive or annoyed.

For those starting out the inexpensive Imports work and in most cases do grow.

I will not endorse them due to personal experience with them having a poor reliability record.

That said I've seen more than my share of successful mature SPS tanks using the Cree X series white LEDs . Spectrum matters and unless you're sure sure of your spectrum, Caveat Emptor.

I will never understand why someone would buy 4 high end frags and expect to spend less on a LED light to grow them...

Bill
